Home cleaning in Belgium: frequency, plans, and how to choose
Saturday morning always starts the same way: vacuuming, the bathroom, the kitchen floor. And the weekend is already half over. Hiring help for cleaning isn’t a luxury reserved for a few. It’s often a matter of organisation. The key is choosing the right option: one-off or regular, a few hours or a deep clean, and above all, the right person. Here’s how to find your way.
One-off or regular: start with your real need
Before looking for someone, ask yourself a simple question: what really weighs on you?
Regular cleaning
This is the most common option. Someone comes at a fixed frequency to handle routine maintenance.
- Every week: ideal for families with children, pets that shed, or large spaces.
- Every two weeks: a good compromise for a couple or a single person who already does the basics daily.
- Once a month: useful for tasks you put off (interior windows, tops of cupboards, fridge), in addition to what you do yourself.
The advantage of regular cleaning: the person knows your home, your habits, and your priorities. You no longer have to explain everything.
One-off cleaning
It addresses a specific moment:
- a major spring clean;
- restoring order after renovations;
- preparing for a party or the arrival of family for the end-of-year holidays;
- cleaning before handing back the keys to a property.
A one-off clean often takes more time than a maintenance session. Inform the person about the real condition of the property: it’s the best way to avoid surprises about the duration.
The special case of cleaning before the inventory of fixtures
Moving out of a rental? The exit clean deserves special attention. As a rule, you must return the property in the condition described upon entry. Normal wear and tear is not your responsibility, but damage and lack of maintenance may be. The exact rules depend on your region and your lease: reread it and keep your entry inventory of fixtures to hand.
A few points often checked at the exit:
- the oven, the cooker hood, and the fridge (including the inside);
- limescale on taps, the shower, and tiles;
- windows and frames;
- skirting boards, light switches, and doors.
Schedule this clean a few days before the inventory of fixtures, once the property is empty. Cleaning between boxes is rarely effective.
Defining the scope: rooms, tasks, priorities
The most common misunderstanding with a cleaning helper? Not clearly stating what you expect. Take five minutes to make a list.
Rooms: all of them, or just the kitchen, bathroom, and floors? Is there a room where you prefer no one to enter?
Tasks:
- dusting, vacuuming, mopping;
- kitchen and bathroom;
- changing sheets;
- interior windows;
- ironing (often offered separately, see the ironing services);
- exterior windows (more the job of a window cleaner).
Priorities: if time is short, what needs to be done first? A helper who knows your priorities does better in two hours than one who guesses in four.
Equipment: who provides the vacuum cleaner, products, and cloths? Also mention fragile surfaces (marble, oiled parquet, stainless steel) and products to avoid.
Possible options in Belgium
You have roughly two ways to hire someone for cleaning.
Service vouchers
This is the best-known system. You buy vouchers from the issuer, and an approved company sends you a cleaning helper, who is their employee. Service vouchers cover household tasks (cleaning, laundry, ironing, small errands, meal preparation), not professional activities.
Note: this is a regional system. The price of the voucher, the number of vouchers you can buy, and the tax benefit depend on the region where you live. And this has changed a lot in recent years. Flanders abolished the tax reduction for vouchers purchased from 1 January 2025, and Brussels abolished it in 2026. Wallonia is maintaining it for now, but its government has announced its abolition from 2027, as part of a reform whose details remain to be specified (according to Test Aankoop, October 2026). Before making your calculations, check the up-to-date conditions on the FPS Finance website and on that of your region.
An independent service provider
You can also hire a self-employed person or a small business who invoices you for their services. This option works well for a deep clean, restoring order, or a one-off need. Always ask for the price (per hour or fixed rate), what is included and what is not, and whether travel is charged.
In both cases, stay on the right side of the law: a helper paid "under the table," with no framework, protects neither the person working nor you in case of an accident.
Choosing the right cleaning helper
Cleaning means entrusting your keys and your privacy. Trust comes first. A few concrete criteria:
- Reviews from other clients, especially if they mention punctuality, care, and discretion.
- Proximity: someone who lives ten minutes away will be more readily available and more reliable.
- Clarity: a profile that explains what is offered, at what price, and when is already a good sign.
- The first exchange: a good helper asks questions about your home and your expectations. That’s rather reassuring.
- A trial session: take stock after the first or second time. What doesn’t work is better sorted out immediately than in three months.

What really changes: the mental load
We often talk about time saved. But the real benefit is elsewhere. It’s the "I should…" that disappears from your mind. The bathroom is no longer a pending task. Saturday becomes Saturday again. We discuss this at length in our article on mental load.
Delegating cleaning isn’t laziness. It’s choosing where you put your energy.
